KBIC Even Start A Family Literacy Program
"May the Spirit of Every Family Be Preserved Not Broken"
How does an Even Start program work?
The KBIC Even Start Literacy Program is designed to include
early childhood education and adult education into one unified
program by focusing on the needs of the entire family. Even Start
supports the philosophy that the educational achievement of
children and their parents is interrelated and that improving
the literacy (reading) skills of parent’s results in a positive educational
experience for their children.Even Start is a family literacy
program that serves a parent or parents who:
- Would like to achieve the education goal of completing high school or obtaining a GED.
- Have a child or children under the age of 8.
- Live on or near the KBIC Reservation.
Even Start Includes:
- Adult Education.
- Early Childhood Education.
- Parenting Education.
- Parent and Child Interaction Time.
Parents will:
- Set goals for themselves and their families.
- Work toward high school completion or prepare for the GED.
- Gain life and job skills that lead to economic independence.
Pregnant teens will:
- Receive assistance with high school completion.
Early Childhood Education
Children from birth to age five will:
- Attend Early Childhood Education in conjunction with Head Start/Early Head Start or KBIC Day Care Pre-Primary Program.
- Meet with a teacher who makes appointments with each family to bring a variety of family activities to their home.
The teacher also provides parents with age appropriate developmental information about their child.
Parenting Education
Parent education is supported through center and home-based activities to help parents become
the primary teacher for their children and full partners in their child’s education. Parents
learn new ways to deal with common parenting concerns.
Parent & Child Interaction Time
Activities take place at the KBIC Day Care, in the Ojibwa Community Library, in the community,
and in the home to help families provide young children with enriched literacy experiences
that support school success.
